What Is Respite Care?

Respite care allows caregivers to temporarily take a break from looking after those who require attention as someone else steps in to do that job for them. So if you are exhausted and are looking for a little break, this is the best option out there since it gives you some time for yourself! Most importantly, you won’t have to worry as much because those you care for will be in good hands!

What Does Respite Care Involve?

Respite care is generally provided by designated institutions that can provide experienced and trustworthy caregivers to look after your loved ones. One can make use of the facility itself and leave the person at the help center for a while or alternately, be looked after at home by a paid carer for a few hours.

What Are The Different Types Of Respite Care?

The key respite care are:

  • A brief stay in a care home
  • Homecare by a paid carer
  • Day care centres
  • Help from family and friends

Additionally, some areas may even offer:

  • Respite holidays
  • Sitting services

 

A Brief Stay In A Care Home

Some care homes offer short-term respite care. To avail this service, you must make a booking in advance if possible, since getting a slot at short notice might be difficult. For example, if you are planning to go on a holiday, this might be a good option for you.

Homecare By A Paid Caregiver

If you care for someone and need more time for yourself, you can always arrange for a paid carer to help out at home. This is called homecare. You can decide whether you will need this service regularly once a week so you can take that day to do your chores etc or perhaps for an entire week even! If the person needs round the clock supervision, then live-in care can also be arranged.

Day Care Centres

Day care centres are particularly beneficial for those who find it difficult to go out, socialize, make friends and engage in different activities. For instance, some day cares offer social events such as high teas for meeting new people, dances, singing and talent showcases or games and art related activities for you to have fun with others. This allows the person to stay active and maintain a good friends circle too.

Help From Family And Friends

Family members or close friends can even cover for you when you suddenly need to go somewhere or even move in while you are away on holiday or at work. Since you already know them, both you and your loved one are at ease. Alternatively, they can even take in your loved one at their house to care for them in the comfort of their own home!

Respite Holidays

Respite holidays allow carers and people with various illnesses or disabilities to take a break from everyday life and go on a little vacation.

Sitting Services

Some charities and carers’ organizations offer sitting services where a trained volunteer keeps the person you care for company for a couple of hours. In some places this service might be free while in others, a small fee may be charged.

 

Respite Care In Ontario 

Ontario funds two types of respite so to give families a break from caregiving. These are:

  • In-home respite
  • Out-of- home respite (Long-term care homes / Adult day programs)

In-Home Respite Care:

The person you care for can receive care services at home while you are away. A personal care worker or healthcare professional such as a nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist can provide help through:

  • Providing personal Support (For example, oral care, dressing, feeding, bathing, medications, helping the person to move around or carry out other chores etc.)
  • Helping them around the house (cleaning, laundry, preparing meals etc.)
  • Providing professional help (nursing, physiotherapy etc.)

 

Out – Of- Home Respite:

If you are away for a long period of time, on a holiday or for any other purpose, then your loved one can stay for upto 60 days in a long-term care home. However, they cannot be admitted for more than 90 days in a calendar year.

Additionally, adult day programs are also a viable option if you need a day or a few days off. You can enroll the person you care for in one of these programs that offer structured and supervised group activities and more.

 

Caring for your loved one can get a bit challenging at time since there’s a lot one has to do in the day. However, knowing you can always leave them with someone responsible can be a great relief and allows you to take some time off whilst allowing them to also form some meaningful relationships and engage with other people.
