How Much Does Speech Therapy Cost in Ontario? Assessments, Sessions and Insurance Explained

Updated September 24, 2026. All amounts are in Canadian dollars.

When you start looking for speech therapy for your child, the first question is often straightforward: how much will it cost?

The answer becomes less straightforward when one clinic quotes an hourly rate, another lists 30-minute appointments, and an assessment may or may not include a written report. Insurance adds another layer: a plan that covers speech therapy may still leave part of the bill for your family to pay.

There is no single price for private speech therapy across Ontario. The useful comparison is the assessment fee, the cost and length of each appointment, what is included, and the amount your insurer or funding program will actually reimburse.

This guide explains how to compare those costs and prepare for a conversation with a provider in Milton, Mississauga, or elsewhere in Ontario.

1. How much does private speech therapy cost in Ontario?

Published Ontario clinic fees give families a starting point, but they are not a provincial price list. The examples below were checked on September 24, 2026 and may change.

These are examples from other providers, not SpectacoKids prices, a market average, or a complete Ontario price range. More extensive assessments, specialist services, and separately billed work may cost more. Confirm the current fee and what it includes before booking.

If you are comparing speech therapy costs in Mississauga or Milton, ask each clinic for the same information. A lower appointment price does not necessarily mean a lower total cost if the appointment is shorter or additional services are charged separately.

2. Assessment fees, session fees, and what is included

An assessment and a therapy appointment serve different purposes. Before comparing prices, make sure you know which service the quote describes.

The initial assessment

An assessment helps the speech-language pathologist understand your child’s communication and plan appropriate next steps. Depending on the concern, ask whether the quoted fee includes:

  • A discussion of your child’s history and your priorities.
  • Observation, assessment activities, and any relevant testing.
  • An explanation of the findings and recommendations.
  • A written summary or a more detailed report.
  • A follow-up conversation to answer questions.

An appointment advertised as a “one-hour assessment” does not, by itself, tell you whether report writing is included. Ask whether a more complex assessment could require additional appointments or charges, and how you would be told before those costs arise.

Ongoing therapy appointments

For each appointment, clarify how the booked time is used. Does a 45-minute session include the parent discussion and home-practice guidance? Is any portion reserved for documentation? Are extra school meetings or reports billed separately?

Think about the schedule as well as the individual fee. Four appointments at $150 would cost $600 before any assessment, additional fees, or reimbursement. A month containing five scheduled appointments would cost $750 at that same hypothetical rate.

The number and length of appointments should be discussed with the treating clinician. A budget calculation is not a recommendation for how much therapy a child needs.

“What is included in the fee?” comparison checklist

Use this checklist when you contact a clinic:

Ask aboutWhat to clarify
AssessmentDuration, number of visits, and whether feedback is included
Written reportWhether it is included, optional, or charged separately
Therapy sessionBooked duration and how time is divided
Parent coachingIncluded within sessions or billed as a separate service
Home activitiesWhether guidance or materials are provided
School communicationCharges for calls, meetings, or written recommendations
In-home appointmentsTravel fees, travel zones, and minimum booking length
ProviderWho delivers the appointment and who oversees the plan
CancellationNotice required and the fee for a late cancellation or missed visit
PaymentWhen payment is due, receipt details, and whether direct billing is available

If an assistant will provide some sessions, ask about supervision and check that your insurer covers that arrangement. Do not assume the same reimbursement rules apply to every provider type.

Ontario’s professional regulator, CASLPO, publishes guidance on fees and billing in private practice. Families can also use its public register to check a speech-language pathologist’s registration.[3]

3. Is speech therapy covered by OHIP or public funding?

Parent and child exploring community and private clinic options for speech therapy.

A privately booked speech therapy appointment is generally not paid for through OHIP. That does not mean every family must pay privately: Ontario has publicly funded pathways for eligible children. Private clinic coverage and access to a public program are different questions.[2,4,5]

Preschool speech and language services

Ontario’s Preschool Speech and Language Program provides services at no cost to families, and a doctor’s referral is not required. Contact the local program to ask about eligibility, intake, and current availability.[4]

Children’s rehabilitation and school services

Children’s Treatment Centres and school-based rehabilitation services are other pathways to explore. Ask the relevant provider or school which supports are available for your child and how to access them.[5]

Ontario Autism Program funding

Speech-language pathology is an eligible category of OAP core clinical services. Eligibility, provider requirements, available funding, and expense rules still apply. Registration alone does not mean a private appointment will be reimbursed.[6]

For background, see our Ontario Autism Program funding guide. Confirm current eligibility and expense rules using the official Ontario guidance.

When comparing public and private options, ask about the service offered, scheduling, family involvement, and coordination with other providers. Neither the funding source nor the price alone tells you whether a service fits your child.

4. How does private insurance affect the cost?

Parent calling an insurer while reviewing benefits paperwork for speech therapy.

Some extended health plans include speech-language pathology, but coverage varies. A plan may reimburse a percentage of eligible expenses, apply a maximum per visit, set an annual limit, or combine benefits across practitioners. Sun Life’s published plans illustrate how those limits can differ; your own policy determines your coverage.[7]

For example, “80% coverage” does not necessarily mean your insurer will pay 80% of every bill throughout the year. A remaining annual limit or a per-visit cap may reduce the payment.

Questions to ask your insurer before the first appointment

  1. Is my child covered for speech-language pathology? Confirm dependent eligibility and the exact benefit category.
  2. Are both assessments and treatment covered? Ask separately about written reports and parent-only consultations.
  3. What percentage is reimbursed? Ask whether a deductible or maximum eligible charge applies.
  4. Is there a per-visit limit? Find out whether the limit changes with appointment length.
  5. What is the annual maximum, and how much remains? Check whether it is per person, per family, or shared with other services.
  6. When does the benefit year reset? It may not match the calendar year.
  7. Is a physician’s referral or prior approval required for reimbursement? A clinic’s intake requirements and an insurer’s claim rules can differ.
  8. Which provider credentials are accepted? Ask specifically about any sessions delivered by an assistant under supervision.
  9. Are virtual visits, in-home appointments, travel charges, and missed-appointment fees eligible? Check each item rather than assuming.
  10. What documents do I need? Ask about receipts, registration details, submission deadlines, and coordination with a second plan.

Request written confirmation or keep the reference number for your conversation. If direct billing is offered, also ask what happens when an insurer pays only part of a claim. Direct billing changes how a claim is submitted; it does not guarantee payment.

5. A sample speech therapy budget

Parents planning a therapy budget with a calendar, calculator, and notebook.

The example below shows how to calculate a total. Every amount and insurance condition in this example is hypothetical. It is not a SpectacoKids quote, an insurance promise, or a recommended treatment schedule.

Suppose a family is planning one assessment, 12 therapy appointments, and an optional report.

ItemCalculationCost
Initial assessment1 × $250$250
Therapy appointments12 × $150$1,800
Optional report1 × $75$75
Total before reimbursement$250 + $1,800 + $75$2,125

For this example only, assume:

  • The assessment and all therapy appointments are eligible expenses.
  • The report is not covered.
  • The insurer reimburses 80% of eligible expenses.
  • There is no deductible or per-visit cap.
  • The child has $1,000 of reimbursement remaining for the benefit year.
  • Every appointment occurs within that benefit year.

Eligible expenses: $250 + $1,800 = $2,050.

80% of eligible expenses: $2,050 × 0.80 = $1,640.

Expected reimbursement under these assumptions: $1,000, because the remaining annual limit is lower than $1,640.

Family’s total out-of-pocket cost: $2,125 − $1,000 = $1,125.

Without reimbursement, the family would pay the full $2,125. If payment is due at each appointment, the family may also need to pay first and wait for claims to be processed.

Build your own estimate

Use this calculation:

Assessment + planned appointments + agreed additional fees − confirmed reimbursement = estimated family cost.

Keep a record of payments, claims, and the benefit balance. Revisit the estimate when the appointment schedule changes, a new report is needed, or the benefit year resets. If costs are becoming difficult to manage, discuss that with the clinician so the care plan and available options can be reviewed together.

6. How to ask SpectacoKids about fees

SpectacoKids provides speech-language therapy and offers a free consultation. Families can contact the team to discuss services in Milton and Mississauga, as well as in-centre and in-home options across Milton, Mississauga, Oakville, and Burlington.[8,9]

To find out what care would cost for your child, request a free consultation and ask for the current assessment fee, session options, and any additional charges before booking.

Have these details ready:

  • Your child’s age and the communication concerns you would like to discuss.
  • Your preferred location and whether you are interested in in-home care.
  • Any existing assessment reports.
  • The insurance or funding questions you need answered.
  • Your scheduling needs and budget considerations.

A useful question is: “Could you explain the assessment cost, what is included, and the likely charges we should plan for if ongoing sessions are recommended?”

A free consultation is an opportunity to ask questions; it should not be confused with a free clinical assessment. This article does not publish a SpectacoKids fee schedule or promise insurance reimbursement.

How much does a speech therapy assessment cost in Ontario?

There is no single province-wide fee. One published example checked for this article was $200 for a one-hour assessment at Experience Speech. That is one provider’s price, not an average. Ask about the scope of assessment and whether feedback and a written report are included.[2]

Is private speech therapy covered by OHIP?

Private clinic appointments are generally not covered through OHIP. Eligible children may be able to access separate publicly funded programs, including Ontario’s Preschool Speech and Language Program.[2,4]

Will insurance pay the full fee?

That depends on your plan. Check the reimbursement percentage, eligible fee limit, deductible, annual maximum, and remaining balance. Coverage for speech therapy does not automatically mean the whole bill will be paid.[7]

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You can generally approach a private speech-language pathologist directly, but confirm the provider’s intake requirements and any referral conditions attached to insurance reimbursement. Ontario’s Preschool Speech and Language Program does not require a doctor’s referral.[4,10]

Are in-home sessions more expensive?

They can be. Some clinics charge different rates by setting or add travel fees. Ask for the complete in-home price, including any travel charge, before comparing it with an in-clinic appointment.[1]

How many appointments should I budget for?

Ask the clinician for an initial plan and a review point after assessment. Needs and progress vary, so an early estimate should not be treated as a guaranteed number of visits. Plan for the agreed appointments and review costs as the plan changes.

Does SpectacoKids offer a free consultation?

Yes. You can request a free consultation through the contact page or call +1 647-996-4409. Ask the team for current assessment and therapy fees during that conversation.[9]
