Support Options to Explore While You Wait

Information checked September 28, 2026.

Your child has needs today. The next appointment, program invitation or funding decision may still be some distance away. It can be hard to know whether to make another call, complete another form, or simply wait.

The first useful step is to name what you are waiting for. A family seeking an autism assessment is at a different stage from a family already registered in the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) and waiting for a core clinical services invitation. A family with a funding agreement may be searching for an available provider. Each stage has different options.

This guide explains those stages, points to supports you can ask about now, and provides verified contacts for families in Peel and Halton. It complements our Ontario Autism Program funding guide, which explains how the funding program works.

1. Which kind of wait is your family experiencing?

Waiting for an autism assessment or written diagnosis

OAP registration requires a written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional, Ontario residency and an age under 18. If an assessment has not happened yet, ask your child’s doctor or primary care provider about the diagnostic pathway and what information would be helpful for a referral. You can also contact a local SmartStart Hub to discuss developmental concerns and available services. [1, 2]

You do not need to put every other concern on hold while seeking a diagnosis. Ontario’s Preschool Speech and Language Program can be contacted without a doctor’s referral; its services are for children from birth until they start school. The SmartStart Hub at ErinoakKids can help Peel and Halton families explore local pathways when they are unsure what services their child may need. A Hub conversation is free. Ask each program about its own intake and eligibility. [3, 4]

Registered in the OAP, waiting for a core clinical services invitation

Registration is an important step, but it does not itself provide a core funding agreement. Ontario says children and youth are invited to enter core clinical services in the order they registered. After accepting an invitation, a family works with AccessOAP through determination of needs and the funding process. [5]

While waiting, ask about foundational family services. Ontario makes these available free of charge to families registered in the OAP. These services may include caregiver workshops, family and peer supports, brief consultations and transition supports, depending on the provider and current offerings. They are a separate stream from core clinical funding. [6]

Families of younger children can also ask AccessOAP whether the caregiver-mediated early years program is relevant. Ontario says most children aged 12 to 48 months who are registered in the OAP are eligible; access is governed by that program’s invitation and eligibility process. For a child facing defined high-risk factors, ask about the OAP’s urgent response services and the separate intake criteria. Do not assume that a concern alone establishes eligibility. [7, 8]

Funding or approval in place, waiting for a provider appointment

If you have a funding agreement or other approval, the next wait may be for an assessment, a suitable clinician or an appointment time that works for your family. Make a list of the goals that matter most, preferred setting, travel limits, and questions about supervision and fees. Ask providers what is available and how their intake works. A provider’s appointment availability is separate from the OAP invitation process.

AccessOAP can help clarify your registration or funding status. A clinic can explain its own services and openings. They answer different questions. [1, 5]

2. Start with the support that fits your current stage

There is no single application that unlocks every service. Use the following as a set of possible starting points, then confirm details directly.

Pathway

Who should ask about it

First practical step

SmartStart Hub

Families unsure about a child’s development or which local service to contact

Describe your concerns and ask for navigation and intake guidance. It may help with eligible support and respite needs if the ministry approves an application. [10]

3. What do foundational family services actually offer?

Foundational family services are meant to help caregivers learn, connect and plan. They can be useful while a family waits for core clinical funding, and Ontario says they remain available along the OAP journey. They are free for families registered in the OAP. [6]

Offerings can differ by provider. Rather than expecting a particular workshop or an immediate start date, ask:

Which workshops, consultations, groups or transition supports are currently open?

Is my child or I eligible for this specific offering?

Is it online, in person, or both?

Is there a registration process or a start date?

May other caregivers attend?

Can you direct us to another local provider if this option does not fit?

For Peel and Halton, ErinoakKids publishes foundational services information. ROCK lists free foundational family services for OAP-registered Halton families, alongside other autism programs. Check each provider’s current calendar or contact its intake team before making plans. [11, 12]

These services do not replace an individualized clinical plan. They are, however, a real route to information and support during a period when families often feel they must wait for everything.

4. Verified Peel and Halton resource contacts

Details checked September 28, 2026 against the organizations’ own pages or Ontario’s program listings. Contacts and offerings may change. Useful details might include difficulty communicating a need, coping with a transition, completing a daily routine or participating with peers. Bring concrete examples to a conversation with the teacher.

You can ask:

What are you noticing at school, and when does it happen?

Which classroom supports are already being tried?

Who coordinates special education discussions or referrals here?

Should we discuss an Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

How will we share updates and review whether a support helps?

Ontario advises parents who think an IEP may help, even when a child has not been formally identified as exceptional, to speak with the teacher or special education teacher about the process. The school’s decision and supports still depend on the child’s circumstances. [9]

For younger children, tell a daycare or early years program what you are observing and ask what they notice in that setting. If communication is a concern, contact the Preschool Speech and Language Program directly. A family can also speak with a SmartStart Hub about developmental supports without first settling every diagnostic question. [3, 4]

6. What to ask a private therapy provider without committing

Exploring a service is not the same as signing up for it. A first conversation should help you understand the options, the provider’s process and whether the service is a fit for your child.

Consider asking:

Who would assess and work with my child? Ask about professional registration, clinical supervision and whether the same person would provide ongoing sessions.

What would the first appointment involve? Ask how your child’s interests, communication and comfort are considered.

What could the goals look like? Ask how family priorities and daily routines shape them.

How would you measure and explain progress? Ask when goals are reviewed and what happens if a strategy is not working.

What would it cost? Request assessment, session, report and travel fees, along with cancellation rules and receipts.

Where and when are appointments offered? Ask about in-centre, in-home or other options and current availability.

What documentation would you need? Share existing reports only through the provider’s appropriate intake process.

Can we take time to decide? Ask for a written summary of recommended next steps.

If you plan to use OAP funding, confirm current eligibility and expense rules with AccessOAP and the provider before assuming an appointment can be reimbursed. If you plan to use insurance, ask the insurer about your own benefits. [1, 5]

SpectacoKids offers a free consultation for families considering its services. The conversation can help clarify which questions to ask next; it is not a diagnosis, a funding decision or a promise of an immediate appointment. [15]

7. If you are registered in the OAP, confirm your status with AccessOAP and contact a foundational services provider. If funding is in place, compare providers using the same questions. You may be able to make more than one enquiry, but you do not have to complete every task in one day.

How SpectacoKids can help

SpectacoKids provides ABA Therapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy, along with other family supports. The clinical plan, if any, should be decided with qualified professionals after they learn about your child.

Phone: +1 647-996-4409
Email: info@spectacokids.com
Website: spectacokids.com

Frequently asked questions

Can I register for the OAP before my child has an autism diagnosis?

OAP registration requires a written autism diagnosis from a qualified professional, along with the program’s age and residency requirements. You can still ask a local SmartStart Hub or relevant public program about services based on developmental concerns while you seek an assessment. [1, 4]

Do foundational family services use up my OAP core funding?

Ontario describes foundational family services as free for registered families and separate from the core clinical services funding pathway. Ask the delivering provider about a specific program’s enrolment process. [6]

Is there a guaranteed wait time for OAP core funding?

No reliable individual date can be given from this article. Ontario says invitations are issued in registration order; AccessOAP is the place to ask about your own registration and status. The date of a private provider appointment is a separate question for that provider. [1, 5]

Can I ask a school about an IEP while waiting?

Yes. Ontario advises speaking with your child’s teacher or special education teacher about the IEP process even when the child has not been formally identified as exceptional. The school’s assessment of the child’s needs determines the next steps. [9]

Can we contact SpectacoKids if we are still deciding?

Yes. SpectacoKids offers a free consultation to discuss your concerns and its services. Ask about availability and costs before making any decision.
